Girls’ basketball team the FLC Bobcats won against the William L. Sayre Sabers during their first home game of the 2023-2024 season on December 6, 2023, with a score of 43-21.

Due to their previous loss at Parkway Center City, the Bobcats went into the game with anxious energy.

“I was a little nervous because they had a lot of players and we like had a little bit of players,” said point guard Makiyah Brunson.

The Bobcats played the entirety of the game with 7 players but despite FLC having few players, the Bobcats ended up scoring 12 points while the Sabers scored 5.

“We got [to] work on like, moving like listening and looking out,” said point guard Janai Richardson. “But other than that, I think everybody came together at the end of the day.”

In the second quarter, the Bobcats quickly gained confidence scoring another 12 points while the Sabers scored 2. Many old and new players were able to play on the court and work as a team. Brunson was responsible for 8 out of the 10 points scored making the game 24-7.

“A lot of people that never scored started scoring today, so that was good,” said Brunson. “I think we got better [working as a team] since last year.”

In the third quarter, FLC Bobcats were ahead of the Sabers by a significant amount. Bobcats scored 10 points while the Sabers scored 8 taking the game at that point 34-15. Richardson made 4 out of the 10 points scored in the third quarter.

“When I made my tough shots, like when it was a bunch of people on me I felt good,” said Richardson. “Like I’m tough.”

In the final quarter, the Bobcats defeated the Sabers with a score of 43-21. The Bobcats scored 9 points while the Sabers scored 6. The team was ecstatic for their first win of the season.

“We at home, I wanted to win our first game regardless,” said Brunson. “And it’s our first home game and we won so that’s good.”

Players were reassured of the team’s ability as a whole after being unsure if they would win. Winning the game against the Sabers with a 22-point difference made the Bobcats happy to win this game.

“I am proud of it. Especially because we came up with like one practice. I think we did a real good practice once,” said Richardson.“My people ate, we did real good. Go FLC bobcats, girls’ basketball.”
