Teaching: New Horizons illustration

High schools have students doing a lot. Extracurriculars, community service hours, and even part time jobs can flood a student’s schedule. With this incoming school year, it isn’t just students who will be trying new things. Many teachers at FLC have changed positions and are taking on new tasks. Two teachers in particular, Ms. Garvey and Mr. Patel, are now assistant teachers. 

The assistant teacher role gives educators more of a wide perspective on student activity. Assistant teachers help bridge the gap between each high school year for both students and teachers, helping each community build upon skills that they have previously learned. This gives them flexibility in their insights, seeing both sides of the classroom environments. 

Ms. Garvey mentions an “open door” policy for all students. She wants everyone to feel comfortable coming to her for guidance when it comes to skill building and school work. 

“A lot of times, we’re all teaching things and we’re doing a great job[…] but the kids aren’t seeing the connection between what’s happening in one class to a class next door,” says Garvey. 

“There’s someone in the building who can work with the teachers and help make the connection for the kids.” 

Along with the switch to assistant teachers, Ms. Krakauskas is also taking on a new role this year as FLC’s dean. This isn’t Ms. K’s first time as a school dean, as she’s held this position at other schools in the past. You may already know her as a teacher, she used to teach AP United States History at FLC, but with her new role in the school’s community, she’s hoping to make a positive impact on the students. 

“I’ll have more of an opportunity now to focus on doing more positive things with the students and also be more of a presence in the building.” She mentions when asked about her switch. “I can focus on the whole school as opposed to just partially and then being in a classroom. I can actually truly focus on the wellbeing of the students.” 

Ms. K is excited to have more community events that positively impact the student body. 

“Look out for this year’s Homecoming Dance! I definitely am going to keep trying to do more dances or other kinds of positive things. I’ve been speaking with people in the Alumni Association and they’re really trying to create an activity a month in order to involve the alumni.”
